Jacques Henry Sergene first began creating what is now known as Kangol hats in England in 1918. He began importing French berets as no one in England was doing that at the time.  By 1930 Jacques company was pretty big and he decided to brand his berets as everyone else was trying to get in on his act. As the legend goes, he took the K from either SilK, Knitting or Knitted, the ANG from angora and the OL from wool to come up with the company name.

There have been many changes to the company over the years regarding the type of headwear it produced. The company was innovative, it created helmets for soldiers during the wars. The company also became part of Rock 'n Roll history in the swinging sixties when it secured the sole rights to make and distribute headgear which featured the image endorsement or name of the Beatles. 

Since about the 2000, the variety of headwear created by this multi-faceted company has been noticed in the United States by many of the "cool" people. Missy Elliot, JayZ, Outkast, Ghostface Killah of the Wu Tang Clan and even the legendary B.B.King have all been rocking while wearing these fashion statements on their heads.
